Context: The porringer, a shallow cup or bowl, dates back to the seventeenth century in Britain. In eighteenth-century America it was a very popular object type, both in silver and pewter. The production of this porringer with a visibly hand-hammered surface sets it apart from its historical precedents and roots it firmly in the Arts and Crafts movement.
