Context: Marcantonio Raimondi (Italian, about 1480-1527/34)Apollo on Parnassas (after Raphael),about 1517/20EngravingGift of the Print Club of Cleveland 1963.231The subject is based on the fresco Parnassus (around 1510) painted byRaphael in the Stanza della Signatura located in the Vatican in Rome.Parnassas, a mountain in central Greece, was thought to be sacred toApollo, the god of music and poetry. It was a favorite meeting place of themuses and center of poetic and musical inspiration.Marcantonio Raimondi received his artistic training in Bologna. By 1511 hehad settled in Rome and entered into a working relationship with Raphael, translating the master's drawings into engravings. Raimondi is a primeexample of a professional or reproductive printmaker (an artist who makesprints primarily after designs by other artists). Prints were the principlemeans by which Raphael's art was introduced throughout Europe, especiallyto those who could not otherwise travel to Italy.
