Context: Commissioned to be set into the paneling of a dining room, this painting is a provision de cuisine depicting food awaiting the cooking pot. Dead-game still lifes were quite popular during the 18th century, but here the artist's rendering is especially precise, particularly in the gleaming folds of white fat in the leg of lamb and the furry pelt of the hare. The compelling realism is also heightened by the drop of blood on the animal's nose and the shadow it casts on the stark background wall.Oudry is renowned as one of the outstanding animal painters of the 18th century. Some of his best work was done as a tapestry designer, and he was head of the Beauvais and Gobelins factories from 1734 and 1736 respectively. He published a treatise on painting in 1752.
