Context: Olivetan Master (Italy, Milan)Leaf from an Antiphonary:Initial P: The Prophet Samuel; Arms of the Visconti Family and the Olivetan Order, about 1439-47Ink, tempera, and gold on vellumThe Jeanne Miles Blackburn Collection CMA 1999.131[Cat. no. 74]The text of this leaf reads: Preparate corda vestra domino (Prepare your hearts for the Lord). The decoration is distinguished by a massive initial "P" with Samuel, the last and one of the greatest of Israel's judges. As an old man and at divine behest, he anointed Saul as first king of Israel and later anointed David as Saul's successor. In the bas-de-page (lower margin) are the arms (an eagle on the left and a coiled serpent on the right) of the Visconti family, rulers of Milan, and the emblem of the Olivetan Order (center). Founded in 1319, the Olivetans, known as the "white monks," were a reformed branch of the Benedictines. The Olivetan monastery in Milan was founded in 1400. This leaf belonged to a set of choral books presented to the monastery by one of the Visconti, perhaps about 1439-47. The so-called Olivetan Master was named for a luxuriously illustrated psalter also made for the monastery. He was undoubtedly a monk there.
