Context - Person: Pollock Jackson Context - Date: 1950 - 1950 Context: Jackson Pollock's abstract fusions of line, color, and movement have had a seminal influence on successive generations of artists. Since the late 194os, his art has been considered the pivotal manifestation of Abstract Expressionism, or Action Painting, as his form of it is known. In the years following World War II, it was Pollock and his contemporaries -among them, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and David Smith - who elevated American art to international prominence. Number 27 (the number refers roughly to its sequence in the artist's yearly production) is situated at a midpoint in the series of drip paintings and drawings Pollock made between 1947 and 1953, which are considered his consummate achievements. He stood above an unprimed, unstretched canvas spread out on the floor; with a paint-loaded brush or stick he proceeded to fling the paint onto the canvas surface. Skeins of paint had earlier been used by Hans Hoffmann, the Surrealists, and others, but Pollock's sustained and ambitious mastery of this technique appropriated it as his own. In Pollock's new painterly syntax, distinctions of line and mass, color and surface, figure and ground were eliminated. He transformed thought and process into action by externalizing his subconscious. 'I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them,' he explained. In Number 27, he created exquisitely balanced vistas of paint through line, distinguished by a marvelous use of bright colors within a darker tracery. Exactly what he was expressing remains indefinable. 'When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through.' On another occasion, when asked by Hans Hoffmann if he worked from nature, Pollock replied simply, 'I am nature.'
