Context: This oil sketch depicts a man seated on the banks of the river Seine in an industrial area, just north of Paris. It is one of many preparatory studies Seurat made for his monumental painting, Bathers at Asnières (1883-84, National Gallery, London). In the final painting, the man is shown without a shirt or a hat, and surrounded by other men sunning themselves on the grassy river bank. Seurat borrowed the brilliant colors of Impressionism to suggest outdoor light, but he sought to add structure by emphasizing basic, geometric shapes and by defining forms with firm outlines. His attempt to reform Impressionism gave birth to a new movement called Neo-Impressionism.
