Context: The lyrical grace of the Virgin is deliberately contrasted with Christ's rigid and formal pose; appropriate for the blessing he bestows. The spidery elongation of the Virgin's fingers is a characteristic feature of the International style.Starnina trained and worked in Florence and then spent several years in Valencia. In Spain, the artist's style was enriched by local traditions; the Virgin's elaborate crown for example, owes much to Valencian decorative art.
