Subject Description: Illustration for Edmond Renoir's Short Story "L'Étiquette"
Context: This drawing was executed by Renoir as an illustration for his brother Edmond's short story "L'Étiquette". The opening scene takes place in Bordighera, on the Italian Riviera, on a hotel terrace overlooking the mediterranean. Using his brother as a model, Renoir depicted the story's protagonist, the parisian painter Jean Martin, contemplating his bill.Renoir's portrait of his brother, the journalist Edmond Renoir, was made to illustrate an article written by Edmond for "La Vie Moderne", a periodical to which many Impressionist artists contributed. Even in black and white, Renoir has succeeded in capturing the dazzling light effects of the Côte d'Azur, where the two brothers vacationed in 1881.
