Context: In his later years, Saint-Aubin became increasingly ambitious in doucmenting the dignitaries of his day. In the case of the Bishop of Chartres, who would never consent to sit for a portrait, the artist was secretly set up behind a screen while the bishop dined with the Count and Countess de Maillebois.
