Context: Hubert Robert began his eleven-year stay in Rome in the spring of 1754 at the age of 21; for nine of those years he was a student at the French Academy. One of Robert's favorite sketching sites in Rome was the Colosseum. In this oval composition a young artist, probably Robert himself, is seen at work in one of the lofty, crumbling vaults. Robert took some liberties with the architecture, blending what he saw with his own romantic vision.
