Context:

In The Red Light, George Segal's portrayal of a middle-aged man crossing a darkened street suggests a moment frozen in time. Working with a live model, Segal used cloth soaked in a durable white industrial plaster to cast the figure in sections. Then he reassembled the pieces, adjusted the pose, and added extra plaster to accent or blur details. The man's all-white surface conveys an anonymous, ghostly presence. Segal placed the figure among real objects-the truck and the traffic light-to establish an authentic environment for the mundane action depicted. By highlighting a familiar, ordinary activity, Segal hoped to capture the sense of alienation often associated with urban life.
