Context:

This work was painted about 1907, but it treats a theme that Rousseau first used in "Surprise" of 1891 (private collection). He based the exotic vegetation of his many jungle pictures on studies that he made in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, and adapted the wild beasts from an illustrated children's book about animals that his daughter owned. The painting may have been shown in the Salon d'Automne of 1907.
