Context: The inspiration for this figure appears to be a famous over life-sized stone statue of Dovizia by the sculptor Donatello (ca. 1386-1466). Until the eighteenth century, Donatello's sculpture stood above a granite column in the Mercato Vecchio (today the Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele), a major square of Florence. Della Robbia, who worked primarily in terracotta (fired clay), probably adapted Donatello's original sculpture for domestic use. Another Dovizia figure that survives today includes an inscription: GLORIA ET DIVITIE IN DOMO TUA (May honor and riches be within thy house). Dovizia always appears as an idealized young woman bringing the bountiful gifts of nature to the market -- a welcome personification of abundance.
