Context: Georges Roualt dedicated himself to creating a deeply religious art based on his Catholic beliefs. His works convey a powerful spirituality that is enhanced by his expressionist painting style. To communicate his emotional interpretations of his subjects, he built up thick layers of intense, rich color. Roualt's early experience as an apprentice in a stained-glass workshop may have encouraged his preference for luminous colors and strong black outlines. These elements unite in this painting to create an image of Christ that is at once serene and powerful.
