Context: Joseph of Arimathea was the disciple who obtained Pontius Pilate's permission after the crucifixion to take Christ's body and bury it in his own tomb.The perspective of the ledge indicates that the painting was meant to be seen at a considerable height, probably above a tomb. Joseph's appearance is based on the features of a real person--perhaps the man who once rested in a tomb below the painting.
