Context: Larry Rivers was one of many artists who came of age towards the close of the abstract expressionist movement but is one of the very few who emerged as a leader of the succeeding movement towards figurative art. While he admired and adapted the vigorous painterly handling and color rhythms of Willem de Kooning, Rivers subjected these expressionistic tendencies to a figural representation that achieved haunting, recognizable images from fused, blurred and fragmented elements. Recollections of family history, and use of the photograph as a historical document, were central to many of Rivers' paintings of this period . Europe I is based on a photograph of the artist's great-uncle and cousins taken in Poland around 1928.
