Context: Café-concerts were popular places of entertainment for the middle classes in Paris during the late 1800s and usually featured singers or other forms of vaudeville entertainers. In 1895 Lautrec visited the café-concert known as "Les Décadents," where he discovered the Irish singer May Belfort. Shebecame one of the artist's favorite models, and he portrayed her several times performing on stage. May Belfort exemplifies the Parisian vogue for English speaking singers, such as May Milton, Cecy Loftus, and Ida Heath, all three of whom were depicted by Lautrec.
