Wade Fund 1990.2(Cat. no. 43)This monumental textile is one of the most complete examples of luxuryweaving inthe Eastern Iranian world during the Mongol period. The largescale of the pattern and the prominent inscription band indicate that itwas intended to serve as a wall hanging. Preserved in Tibet, it may havebeen an imperial gift sent after members of Chinggis Khan's family beganpatronizing Tibetan sects in 1251. The red marks are areas that were oncecovered by pieces of cloth, perhaps forming a Tibetan tiger pattern. Theypreserve some of the original color of the background, which has otherwisefaded to tan.
