Context: The Tlingit people of southern Alaska are famed for their basketry and for their carved and painted wooden masks and totem poles. The Chilkat group used finger-weaving (weft twining) to produce colorful blankets that were worn as cloaks on important occasions. The design was first painted on a board by a man, then copied by a female weaver. The stylized animals of the pattern depict clan emblems, to be worn by a clan member. Thus the wearing of a Chilkat blanket proclaimed the owner's ancestry as well as his wealth and prestige.
