The set was inspired by Suetonius's Lives of the Caesars, a famous 2nd-century Latin text that was rediscovered during the Renaissance. The twelve cups at some point were dismantled and reassembled incorrectly. This one pairs the figure of the emperor Augustus with episodes from the life of Caligula. The set of tazzas was probably designed by an Italian goldsmith working with a northern European craftsman who chased the decoration on the silver-gilt surface. Such elaborate and expensive objects were often commissioned by wealthy and powerful nobles for display on grand occasions. Because the entire set of twelve once belonged to Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini, this cup is often called the Aldobrandini tazza.
