Context:
This sampler is an example of one type of design associated with Miss Balch's School in Providence, Rhode Island. An earlier sampler by Mary Munro (1984.331.12) has a more formal archway, which in this sampler has been replaced by a gently meandering border. Both girls used the same motto, one that was particularly popular with Miss Balch's students. Rebekah S. Munro has been tentatively identified as the daughter of Captain James Munro (ca.1748-1814) and Rebecca Snow (ca.1757-1817) of Providence. As far as we know, she was not closely related to Mary Munro. Rebekah died at the age of twenty-three.
