Context:
On the cover of this casket are the stories of the Creation of Man, the Creation of Woman, and Cain Killing Abel. The story of Adam and Eve is on the sides. Only about 50 complete ivory caskets from this period are preserved. They belong to a type characterized by borders of decorative rosettes. Only three have scenes from the life of Adam and Eve. The others are decorated with mythological scenes. These boxes were probably used to store small valuables, such as jewelry or coins, and may have been given as gifts.
