Context:
Seated on the ground as she nurses the infant Christ, the Virgin Mary is represented as the Madonna of Humility. Because it stressed simplicity and humanness, this scene was especially popular in Italian art. The divine nature of the subject is made clear by the inscription (in Latin) "Holy Mary, the milk of God," which indicates that the Virgin alone could bear and nurture the son of God.On the Virgin's dress is a blazing sun, beneath her feet is a crescent moon, and surrounding her are rays of light. These attributes allude to another aspect of the Virgin Mary-the powerful and queenly Woman of the Apocalypse.
