In both imagery and performance, this headdress and 1963.307 (in case to the left) embody the themes of agriculture, hard work, virtue, and cooperation between the sexes. They depict the mythic 'farming beast' (part-human, part-antelope, part-anteater) who taught agriculture to the Bamana people and who epitomizes the ideal farmer's qualities.
