Context:
Textile with HuntersWeft-faced compound twill; silkCentral Asia, Sogdiana, 700s-800sThe Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1974.98(Cat. no. 1)This silk preserves pairs of horsemen hunting ibexes (mountain goats). Theibexes and two pairs of rabbits originally filled the spaces between rowsof large floral roundels. Portions of the roundels are preserved at the topand bottom. Although the design was greatly influenced by silks from Egyptand Syria, the abstract style is typically Sogdian. This is one of many Sogdian silks that were traded to Europe and eventuallypreserved in church treasuries.
