Context:
|
This carefully painted portrait, with its sitter placed against decorative fabric, a window, and coats of arms, has all the qualities of Renaissance portraits, such as those of the German painter Hans Holbein. The revival of old art forms was a hallmarkof the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The artist was a close friend of the Rose family. In 1862, the date of this portrait, Sandys traveled to the Netherlands with the son of the sitter, Susanna Rose (1795-1870).
