Context:
The façades and roof combs of Maya structures were frequently decorated with modeled stucco figures. This head, with its noble, rather scornful expression, is probably the portrait of a royal family member. It retains some of the original paint that once covered its surface. The heads of newborn Maya infants were pressed between boards to produce the sloping forehead considered essential for a beautiful profile.
