Context:
Although the composition resembles Renaissance depictions of the Virgin and Child, this image of a woman surrounded by several children is an allegory of Charity. The twisting gestures (some seen from above, others from below) and tightly packed arrangement of figures are typical of Mannerist painting in the Netherlands. Influenced by painting trends in Florence, Paris, and Prague, Bloemaert used distorted forms to heighten the emotional impact of his subject.
