Context:
Unlike many Expressionist sculptors who relied on crude, roughly worked forms to convey emotion, Barlach created graceful figures that communicate the universality of human experience. Around 1906, he began to experiment with ways to fuse inner feeling with the outward appearance of the human body. In Singing Man, the figure's eyes are closed and his mouth is open as he sings. He pulls his knees towards his torso, interlocking his fingers to hold the position tightly, suggesting his concentration on the production of music.
