Context:
Huddle was educated in Virginia and served in the Confederate Army before moving to Paris, Texas, where he worked as a gunsmith. He returned to New York for further study before establishing his studio in Austin in 1876. In 1886, Huddle began a series of historical paintings which included the "Surrender of Santa Anna" and "Davy Crockett." The Dallas Museum of Art work is an oil study for the large-scale final version of "Davy Crockett" which now hangs in the Rotunda of the State Capitol in Austin.
