Subject Description:
One of five scholars sits and holds up a brush, as he prepares to inscribe the blank paper in front of him. The painting presents the image of cultivated literati appreciating the traditional art form of calligraphy in a garden setting. The gardens inwhich they meet are important symbols of learning and sagehood.Group of four gentlemen seated at a table in front of a screen, composing poetry. Fifth gentleman washes hands in a basin held by a servant. The second servant, kneeling in front of a small table, prepares refreshments. The third servant stands with a fan near the table. The fourth, seen in the distance, is standing behind a table on which are perhaps books. There is a garden rock and a plantain tree behind the railing, which is bordering theterrace on the left. On the right, there are two other trees; and a small rock with a flowering shrub in the center foreground
