Context:
The White Bridge, a represention of spring, depicts Horseneck Brook as it traversed across Twachtman's Connecticut property. The artist built the bridge spanning the brook around 1895 and painted it at least five times over the course of the following seven years. Sketchily rendered with feathery brushstrokes of green and rich brown, and left with expanses of unprimed canvas that show through, this scene captures the rapid growth and verdant blossoming of spring.
