This drawing is a preparatory study for "Allegory of Painting", one painting in a series of four dedicated to the fine arts. Commissioned by Madame de Pompadour for the Chateau de Bellevue, these paintings were exhibited at the Salon of 1755 and are now in the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
