Subject Description:
Cardinal Antonelli was a powerful figure in the pontificate of Pius IX.Sculpture, white marble bustOne-quarter length subject face 1/4 left wearing a mozzetta and a zuchetto, supported on a square, molded socle: the entire sculpture supported on a carved and gilt wood stand, Italian, Rome, c.1859, of Neo-Baroque style, the upper rim with a matte ground and a canthus leaves, the shaft of addorsed foliate scrolls, joined at center by four vertical stylized scallop shells, all surrounding a shaped square central inner support, the base a serpentine edged square of carved and gilt wood on four acanthus and whorl carved feet, the apron painted a light grey.Condition: light soiling at edges; scattered very small impact chips.Condition: Light general soiling, light chipping of gilt and white ground at upper rim, repaired crack on upper right scroll of cartouche supporting shell at upper right scroll of front and proper left side; repaired crack on upper left scroll of cartouche supporting shell at proper right.
