Context:
Anna Zborowska was the wife of Leopold Zborowski, a Polish poet, who was Modigliani's art dealer in Paris in the late 1910s. The couple was very close to the young Italian painter, who struggled with obscurity, alcoholism, and ill-health until his death from tuberculosis in 1920 at the age of 35. Portraiture was one of Modigliani's favorite genres. His talent lay in capturing the personality of his sitter in a linear composiiton defined by classic, elongated features. In this sketch for a painting of Madame Zborowski, we already see the importance of a distinct, contoured line and the blank, expressionless eyes. Both of these features give Modigliani's portraits a heightened sense of timelessness and quiet elegance.
